A 28-year-old man has been arrested after police allegedly discovered he was smuggling cocaine inside his body following his arrival at Larnaca Airport.
The arrest followed an operation targeting individuals suspected of importing drugs into Cyprus.
According to Police, officers from the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (YKAN), working with Customs Department officials, stopped the 28-year-old shortly before 7 pm on Monday after he arrived in Cyprus from a foreign country.
During questioning, the suspect allegedly admitted that he was carrying drugs inside his body.
Cocaine capsules recovered
He was taken to Larnaca General Hospital, where medical examinations reportedly revealed a large number of foreign objects inside his body. He was admitted for treatment and remains under police guard.
So far, the suspect has expelled six egg-shaped packages containing approximately 60 grams of cocaine in total gross weight.
Police said investigations are continuing as more packages may still remain inside his body.
Eight-day detention order
During court proceedings held at Larnaca General Hospital on Tuesday, authorities obtained an eight-day detention order against the 28-year-old to facilitate the ongoing investigation.
He remains hospitalised under guard while the investigation continues.
