Large quantities of tobacco and nicotine seized at Larnaca airport

Date:

Large quantities of tobacco products and nicotine pouches were confiscated by the Customs Department at Larnaca Airport on August 8, 10, and 11, from the luggage of passengers who were about to travel to European countries.

According to an announcement from the Customs Department, on Monday, August 11, customs officers at Larnaca Airport selected for inspection the luggage of two passengers travelling to the United Kingdom. During the physical inspection of their luggage, large quantities of tobacco products were found and confiscated. These products did not bear the mandatory health warnings in Greek and Turkish, nor did they include security features or a unique traceability code, indicating that they were untaxed.

Specifically, “each of the two passengers’ luggage contained 75 cartons of 200 cigarettes each. The two passengers were arrested for flagrant offences, and their luggage and contents were seized.”

On the morning of August 11, the two individuals were brought before the Larnaca District Court, which issued a three-day detention order against them.

Furthermore, on Sunday, August 10, customs officers, acting on intelligence information, selected the luggage of a passenger who had arrived from India via Qatar for inspection. Upon examination, large quantities of undeclared nicotine pouches were discovered and seized. These products do not have approval for distribution in the Cypriot market.

Specifically, “419 units of 6.84g nicotine pouches and 40 units of 12.6g nicotine pouches were found. The passenger was arrested for flagrant offences but was later released, after proposing an out-of-court settlement by paying €900 and abandoning the tobacco products for destruction.”
