Two 18-year-old men experience a happy ending after becoming trapped in a ravine. While walking on a mountain trail near the community of Lagoudera, they lose their orientation and end up stuck in a spot from which they cannot exit.
Fire Service Spokesperson Andreas Kettis reports that rescuers hand over the two individuals to the Ambulance Service crew for transfer to Kyperounta Hospital.
Rescue operation details
In a post on platform X, Kettis explains that members of the Fire Service’s EMAK unit and Nicosia Fire Stations use ropes and rescue equipment to extract the two from a rugged, steep area approximately 350 metres deep on a nature trail. Rescuers then accompany them on a roughly 2-kilometre hike to reach road level and the waiting ambulance.
At 15:10, the Fire Service receives a call for help concerning the rescue of two young men (18-year-old males). After communication, they report losing orientation while walking on a mountain trail near Lagoudera community, becoming trapped in a ravine unable to exit, according to Kettis’ post.
Nicosia Fire Stations respond with teams and rescue vehicles. The Fire Service’s Call Management Centre maintains continuous communication with the trapped individuals.
After assessment, rescuers determine the trapped persons locate in a steep spot far from any road, requiring many hours of ascent to reach them. Authorities request a helicopter from the Police Aviation Unit (MAEP).
Meanwhile, the Fire Service’s EMAK deploys a special rescue team.
The MAEP helicopter approaches the site but, due to terrain relief and vegetation, fails to complete the rescue despite multiple attempts and departs.
Rescue teams reach the young men, provide clothing, and prepare to start the rescue operation. The young men remain in good health, as Kettis states.
Rescuers successfully complete the extraction and escort the two to safety.
