Keti Clerides has died aged 76

Keti Clerides has died at the age of 76. In recent years, she had faced cancer with dignity and passed away at the Arodafnousa Centre.

The Democratic Rally (DISY) announced the news in a statement:

“With deep sorrow and grief, we announce the death of our beloved Keti Clerides. From this moment until the time of the funeral, the party’s flags will fly at half-mast. All matters concerning the funeral will be arranged by the Democratic Rally. Details will be announced later.”

According to her biography, Keti Clerides was born in London on 10 May 1949 and was the only daughter of Glafcos Clerides, the fourth President of the Republic of Cyprus.

She studied sociology at the University of London and spoke English, German and French in addition to Greek. She later completed postgraduate studies in political science in New York and law at Gray’s Inn.

Her political career began in 1986 when she was elected Nicosia municipal councillor with the Democratic Rally (DISY). In 1991, she became a Member of Parliament for Nicosia, the third woman in Cyprus’ parliamentary history after Rina Katselli and Claire Angelidou. She was re-elected in 1996 and returned to Parliament in July 2004, filling the seat left vacant when Panayiotis Demetriou became a DISY MEP.

Keti Clerides also served as Presidential Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs during the administration of Nicos Anastasiades.

She founded and led the DISY Secretariat for Community Reconciliation and Civil Society Empowerment. She was also a founding member and the first secretary of the party’s women’s organisation (GODISY) and chaired the DISY Committee on Social Policy and Women’s Rights. In addition, she served on the party’s Supreme Council and Political Bureau and held the position of Vice President.
