University of Cyprus criminologist Professor Andreas Kapardis strongly supports the new “FBI” that will tackle organised crime.
Speaking on Sigma’s “Protoselido”, he explained there are two main definitions of organised crime:
- The media version: structured criminal gangs
- The American version: a triangle of serious criminals, corrupt security officials and politicians
He described the US Federal Bureau of Investigation as a truly independent agency that can investigate anyone; even sitting President Donald Trump.
Kapardis called the Cypriot initiative “a positive development” but stressed success depends on recruiting “an elite group of incorruptible, highly trained specialists who can meet the serious challenge”.
He noted that many Cyprus Police officers already have excellent skills and FBI training, but current laws and police powers remain outdated compared to the US.
Presidential appointment, international team
The President of the Republic will appoint members of the new unit, a system Kapardis accepts.
He made one direct recommendation to the new Justice Minister: immediately form a small task force of about five top experts who are not Cypriot or Greek citizens to guarantee maximum independence and expertise.
