Jewellery worth around €4 million stolen from French museum

Date:

Masked burglars stole jewellery worth an estimated €4 million from the Lalique Museum in Wingen-sur-Moder, northeastern France, during an early-morning break-in on Sunday, 5 July.

The museum burglary incident in France occurred around 05:30, when a group of masked individuals forced entry and smashed display cases containing around 20 jewellery pieces, according to investigative sources cited by AFP.

Security breach under investigation

The museum, dedicated to designer René Lalique, houses more than 650 works and is considered a sensitive cultural site in the region.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage as authorities assess how the suspects were able to carry out the raid despite alarm systems being triggered.

Local officials suggested that delays in the response by a security company may have contributed to the successful theft.

Museum closure and ongoing probe

The museum confirmed it will remain closed for several days while police continue their investigation into the case.

Officials said the stolen items were made of crystal rather than precious gemstones, making them difficult to melt down but still highly valuable on the art market.

The site had previously been flagged as requiring heightened security following a high-profile Louvre jewellery theft in Paris last year.

Broader concerns over museum security

The incident has renewed concerns over the protection of cultural institutions across France, particularly smaller regional museums holding high-value collections.

Authorities continue to investigate the gang’s identity, with officials describing the perpetrators as highly organised and possibly “well-informed”.
