Passenger dies after in-flight incident
Police are investigating the death of a passenger who was travelling on a Jet2 flight from Larnaca to Manchester.
Callum Kerr, a father of one and a bare-knuckle boxer from Warrington, England, died after he was found unresponsive on board the aircraft shortly after it landed at Manchester Airport in the early hours of 22 June.
According to witness accounts, Kerr had reportedly consumed a large amount of alcohol before boarding and allegedly displayed aggressive and disruptive behaviour towards fellow passengers and cabin crew during the flight.
Police were called to the aircraft at around 2:25am following reports of an incident on the flight from Larnaca. When officers boarded the plane, they found that Kerr had been restrained by fellow passengers.
A short time later, he was found not breathing. Police officers and paramedics immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and used a defibrillator before he was taken to hospital in a critical condition. His family later confirmed his death.
Police examining whether restraint contributed
Greater Manchester Police are investigating not only the events leading up to Kerr’s collapse, but also whether the restraint used by fellow passengers was lawful and proportionate.
Under UK law, passengers do not have specific legal powers to restrain others, but they may use reasonable force to prevent harm or danger to themselves or others. Investigators are examining whether the force used was justified and whether it played any role in Kerr’s death.
No arrests as investigation continues
No arrests have been made and the cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed. A date for the coroner’s inquest has also not yet been set.
Investigators are expected to examine video footage, witness statements from passengers and crew members, and medical evidence to establish exactly what happened during the flight from Larnaca to Manchester.
