Israeli airstrike targets European hospital in Gaza, killing 28

On May 13, 2025, an Israeli airstrike hit the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 people and injuring dozens more. The Gaza Civil Defense reported that the strike targeted the hospital’s courtyard and surrounding areas. The Israeli military stated that the operation aimed to eliminate Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader believed to be operating from an underground command center beneath the hospital.

The European Hospital, established in 1989 with support from the European Union, is one of Gaza’s largest medical facilities, providing care to thousands of patients monthly. The hospital was sheltering displaced civilians alongside its regular patients and staff at the time of the strike.

This incident marks the second fatal attack on a hospital in Gaza within 24 hours, following an earlier strike on the Nasser Hospital that killed two people. The World Health Organization has condemned the attacks, warning of the collapse of Gaza’s already devastated healthcare system.
