Israeli airstrike kills six-member family in Gaza City

Date:

An Israeli airstrike killed a father, his wife and their four children in Gaza City on Tuesday, according to local health officials.

The strike hit the family’s home in the Sabra neighbourhood, causing a fire and killing Firas Al-Masri, his wife Salsabel, their three daughters and their son, health officials said.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns over civilian casualties as fighting continues despite a ceasefire agreement.

Israeli army confirms strike

The Israeli military confirmed that it carried out the strike, saying the target was a Hamas fighter and that it was investigating the outcome of the operation.

In separate strikes since Friday, the Israeli military said it had killed three militants from Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Two of those killed were accused by Israel of participating in the 7 October 2023 attack and the abduction of Israeli hostages.

Casualties continue despite ceasefire

The reported airstrike deaths come as Gaza health officials say more than 1,150 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed by Israeli strikes since the October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants came into effect.

Hamas does not typically release figures on its own casualties.

The ceasefire brought an end to the most intense fighting but has not stopped near-daily Israeli strikes. Israel says it is targeting militants.

During the same period, four Israeli soldiers have been killed by militants in Gaza, according to the Israeli military.
