Israel has issued a warning of potential attacks near Tehran University ahead of the annual Al-Quds Day protest in solidarity with Palestine. Millions of Iranians are already present in the area, which also hosts Friday prayers, a central gathering point for demonstrators. The Israeli warning indicated military operations could take place in the coming hours.
UK bans London march over security concerns
In London, the Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has approved a ban on an Al-Quds Day march planned for Sunday. The decision comes amid concerns that organisers, including the Islamic Human Rights Commission (IHRC), are “closely associated with the Iranian regime,” potentially raising tensions due to the ongoing Middle East conflict.
Authorities cite risk of disorder
The ban, in force for one month, aims to prevent public disorder and clashes between protesters and counter-protesters. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp warned that past Al-Quds marches included chants calling for intifada, antisemitic speeches, and support for revolutionary actions. The IHRC has denied links to the Iranian government and confirmed a static demonstration will go ahead instead.
The broader context
Both Tehran and London protests occur against the backdrop of heightened regional tensions following US-Israel attacks on Iran, with ongoing concerns over Iran’s influence abroad and the security risks posed by large demonstrations in major cities.
What is Al‑Quds Day?
Al‑Quds Day is an annual international event held on the last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to show support for Palestinians and protest against Israel’s occupation of East Jerusalem. “Al‑Quds” is the Arabic name for Jerusalem. The day was started in 1979 by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini after Iran’s revolution as a day of solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Large rallies and marches often take place in Iran and other countries, where people call for an end to the occupation and express political support for Palestinian rights.
