Iran’s Revolutionary Guards have warned that any new US attack would trigger a different military response, including the use of new weapons and attacks on targets that have not previously been struck. The warning was issued by Revolutionary Guards spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi, according to Iran’s Fars news agency.
Warning of new targets and weapons
Mohebbi said that a new attack would bring significant changes to Iran’s defence and counterattack, including a change in the “geography of the war” and the weapons and military equipment used.
He said Iran would introduce weapons with new capabilities and target locations that had not previously been attacked. Mohebbi also said Tehran was prepared for a prolonged conflict.
Tensions remain high
The warning follows a statement by Iran’s central military command on Saturday that it had information indicating the United States was preparing to take further action against Iran.
The Iranian command warned that any countries allowing their territory or facilities to support US attacks could also be considered involved in the conflict.
Conflict continues to disrupt the region
The US-Iran conflict has continued for more than six months, with tensions also affecting Yemen, Saudi Arabia and key shipping routes.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen sharply amid the conflict. Reuters reported on Monday that only about a dozen commodity vessels were recorded passing through the strait over the previous weekend, compared with 35 the weekend before.
Renewed fighting in Yemen has also affected regional security and shipping, while attacks linked to the conflict have disrupted Saudi energy infrastructure.
