Iran launches missile at Turkey; Ankara issues warning

Date:

A ballistic missile launched from Iran entered Turkish airspace on Monday, triggering a major security alert after NATO air defence systems intercepted the projectile, according to Turkey’s Ministry of Defence. The Iranian missile incident has increased tensions in the region amid the ongoing Middle East crisis.

Missile intercepted over Turkish airspace

Turkish officials said the Iran missile launch to Turkey was detected shortly after entering national airspace, with NATO defence systems successfully intercepting the projectile before impact.

Debris from the missile fell near the city of Gaziantep, close to the Syrian border. Authorities confirmed that no casualties were reported.

Ankara issues warning

In a statement, the Turkish government stressed that it attaches great importance to regional stability and good neighbourly relations, but warned that any threat against its territory or airspace would be met with decisive action.

Ankara said that the missile incident shows the need for all sides to respect warnings issued by Turkey, adding that compliance is “in the interest of all parties”.

Tehran denies attacks

Earlier, Iranian officials denied carrying out attacks against Turkey, Cyprus, or Azerbaijan, describing the reports as provocations.

The Iranian missile situation comes as tensions across the Middle East continue to rise, with several countries on high alert over possible escalation.

US advisory near NATO base

The United States embassy in Ankara advised non-essential personnel at its consulate near the southern Turkish city of Adana to leave the area. The advisory also urged American citizens to avoid travel to southeastern Turkey, which is located near a major NATO base.

Security measures remain high following the Iranian missile incident, as regional powers monitor developments closely.
