International call for open passage
Approximately 40 countries participating in a virtual conference chaired by the United Kingdom have demanded the immediate and unconditional reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper warned that Iran could face new sanctions if the strategic waterway remains closed.
Iran warned over economic hostage-taking
“The Iranian government is attempting to hold the global economy hostage at the Strait of Hormuz. This must not succeed,” Cooper said. She added that participating countries insisted the Strait be reopened immediately and that the principles of free navigation and maritime law be respected.
Potential sanctions discussed
The nations involved agreed to consider “economic and political measures, including sanctions, to pressure Iran if the Strait remains blocked,” Cooper noted. The move underscores international concern over Iran’s influence on one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints.
