A 63-year-old life-sentenced inmate was found dead on Friday at Nicosia Central Prisons. According to the Prisons Department, he was discovered around 15:55 in his cell by staff, showing no signs of life.
Prison medical personnel provided immediate first aid while an ambulance was called. The inmate was transferred to the Emergency Department of the General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities notified and family informed
The Prisons Department promptly notified the Nicosia CID, and the inmate’s family was informed immediately. Initial indications suggested the death might have been caused by cardiac arrest.
Autopsy reveals cause of death
A full autopsy conducted later revealed that the death did not result from natural causes. Authorities confirmed the inmate died from asphyxiation due to airway obstruction by food.
Background on the inmate
The deceased had been convicted for a double homicide committed in February 2021 in a village in Nicosia District.
The Prisons Department stated it is fully cooperating with the relevant authorities to clarify all circumstances surrounding the death.
