Infant found dead in car as parents went swimming

Date:

An infant has been found dead in Paros. A five-month-old baby died under tragic and disturbing circumstances, prompting a police investigation and the arrest of the child’s parents.

The infant was brought to the island’s Health Centre unresponsive on Sunday afternoon (8 June) by its mother. According to the Centre’s director, the baby had no pulse, dilated pupils, and showed no signs of breathing. Despite attempts at CPR, doctors were unable to revive the child.

Conflicting accounts

Authorities are investigating conflicting witness reports regarding the conditions under which the baby died. One account suggests that the parents, a couple of Albanian origin who have lived on the island for years, left the baby sleeping inside a parked car while they went swimming at Paraspóros beach with their other children.

According to a local resident speaking to Star TV, the couple had four children in total. During the drive to the beach, the baby reportedly fell asleep in its car seat. Believing it best not to disturb it, the parents allegedly left the infant inside the vehicle while they swam nearby.

However, an alternative version of events suggests the baby had been on the beach for several hours and lost consciousness only after the family returned home.

Following the child’s death, doctors immediately alerted the police. Both parents were arrested and face charges of exposing a minor to fatal danger. Their testimonies appear inconsistent: the father claimed they brought the baby to the beach, while the mother said they had left it in the car “for a little while” to rest.

The couple is being held in custody and is expected to appear before the Syros prosecutor. Meanwhile, the local community remains shocked by the tragedy, with investigations ongoing to determine the precise cause and timeline of the infant’s death.
