I Was My Own Enemy: Living with OCD and finding peace

Date:

Yiorgos Georghiou is a Greek-Cypriot writer, martial artist and, at the time of publication, a university student. His writing delves into the complexities of inner struggles, personal resilience and the pursuit of mental peace.

From a young age, he faced the quiet but overwhelming challenges of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), a condition that deeply influenced his inner life while often remaining unseen by those around him. For years, his greatest struggle took place within his own thoughts – through intrusive ideas, relentless mental cycles and the exhausting search for certainty in situations where certainty was impossible.

Discipline became a powerful tool in his journey to navigate that internal turmoil. Through martial arts training and self-reflection, he began recognising the patterns behind the thoughts that had once dominated his life.

I Was My Own Enemy is his debut book – a sincere exploration of living with OCD, portraying the experience not from an outside perspective, but through the reality of someone who has lived it.

The memoir offers a candid account of Georghiou’s experience living with obsessive-compulsive disorder, exploring the routines, compulsive checking and emotional exhaustion of trying to appear well while privately facing daily struggles. He describes the book as “the book I couldn’t find when I needed it” – a work created to offer understanding and support to others experiencing similar challenges.

Following its release, the book has reached #1 New Release in its category on Amazon in May 2026, while it has also gained the endorsement of Myria Antoniadou, President of the Mental Health Protection Association of Nicosia.
I Was My Own Enemy is available in paperback and Kindle editions, with further information available at iwasmyownenemy.com.

“I lost my whole life to this. Not anymore.”
