Hungarian new government pledges reform of state media

Date:

Hungary election winner Peter Magyar has announced plans to suspend state media broadcasting and introduce sweeping reforms to the country’s media landscape after his party’s election victory.

Magyar said his government will adopt a new media law and establish a new regulatory authority to ensure press freedom once it takes office.

“Every Hungarian deserves a public service media that tells the truth,” he said in an interview with state radio Kossuth.

Landslide victory ends long rule

Magyar’s Tisza Party secured a decisive victory in Sunday’s parliamentary elections, ending 16 years of governance by outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

The result marks a major political shift in Hungary, with the opposition now preparing to form a new government.

Focus on media freedom and institutions

The Hungary election winner said restoring trust in public institutions will be a key priority, with a focus on ensuring independence and transparency in state-run media.

He added that reforms will include structural changes aimed at strengthening journalistic freedom and accountability.

Energy security among early priorities

Magyar also said he will meet with the leadership of Hungarian oil company MOL in the coming weeks.

He stressed that securing stable fuel supplies will be one of the government’s most urgent tasks during the transition period.
