Rescue, search, and firefighting operations continued Friday morning local time in Hong Kong. Fires turned an apartment complex into an inferno three days after they started. The death toll reached 94, including one firefighter, according to the South China Morning Post and RTHK.
Another 76 people suffered injuries, including 11 firefighters, the fire service of the Chinese autonomous region reported.
Rescue and search operations expected completion in a few hours.
The blaze erupted in one of the over-30-storey apartment blocks on Wednesday. It spread to others. This stands as Hong Kong’s deadliest disaster in decades.
Investigations into the causes proceed.

Renovation materials fueled the blaze
Bamboo scaffolding and plastic netting surrounded the apartment blocks for renovation work. Authorities built the structures in the 1980s. They required repairs. Officials believe these materials contributed to the fire’s rapid spread. The blaze turned the apartments into a deadly trap.
Police arrested three executives from a construction company. Prosecutors file charges against them for multiple counts of manslaughter due to negligence.
