The Lebanese Hezbollah organisation announced today that it launched drones armed with explosives in an attack on the headquarters of the Israeli military in Tel Aviv, where Israel’s Ministry of Defence is located.
In its statement, the Iran-backed group claimed it carried out its first “aerial drone attack with explosives on the Hakiriya military base, which houses both the Ministry of Defence and the headquarters of the Israeli General Staff, in Tel Aviv.”
The Israeli army reported intercepting 40 projectiles from Lebanon today, including at least two drones, and confirmed that no injuries resulted from the attacks. The Israeli military is aiming to neutralise Hezbollah’s presence in southern Lebanon to enable displaced northern residents of Israel to return home, although it did not specify which installations were targeted.
When asked for comment, the Israeli military spokesman’s office told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that “we do not respond to Hezbollah’s claims.”
Yesterday, Hezbollah, which has been in conflict with Israel since 23 September, claimed responsibility for a missile attack on an airbase south of Tel Aviv. The group has been conducting daily attacks with rockets, missiles, and drones on northern Israel, occasionally extending attacks to central Israel, in support of Hamas in Gaza. Hostilities between Hamas and Israel began on 7 October 2023, following an unprecedented assault by Hamas on Israeli territory.
According to Lebanese authorities, nearly 3,300 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in Lebanon since hostilities with Israel began in October 2023. The majority of fatalities have occurred since September, following a campaign of intense Israeli airstrikes. Hezbollah has since stopped reporting its casualties following the death of its leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike on 27 September.
