Landslides reported in Limassol district
Heavy hail struck the Limassol district on Thursday at noon, with landslides reported in the Louvaras–Kalo Chorio area, police said. The hailstorm mainly affected the Louvaras–Gerasas area, causing hazardous driving conditions.
Police urged drivers to slow down and keep safe distances from vehicles due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.
The Department of Meteorology has issued a yellow warning for heavy storms, hail, and strong winds, in force from 11:00 until 18:00.
Unstable conditions across Cyprus
A low-pressure system is temporarily affecting Cyprus, while a new weather disturbance is expected to arrive from the west on Friday. Dust is also forecast in the atmosphere at intervals.
This afternoon will turn partly cloudy with local rain and isolated storms. Hail may fall during storms, while winds will shift direction and strengthen. Winds will blow mainly north-westerly to north-easterly, locally south-easterly to south-westerly, at 3–4 Beaufort and temporarily up to 5 Beaufort on windward coasts. The sea will be slightly rough to rough.
Rain, storms and possible frost tonight
Clouds will increase tonight, bringing isolated rain or storms, mainly in coastal and mountain areas. Winds will blow mainly west to north-west at 3–4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5 Beaufort.
Temperatures will fall to around 9°C inland, 10°C on the south and east coasts, 13°C on the west and north coasts, and near 3°C on the highest Troodos peaks, where frost may form.
Storms expected to intensify on Friday
Cloud will build in the west and north on Friday, bringing isolated rain or storms at first. From midday, conditions will turn mostly overcast with rain and storms spreading to most areas.
Forecasters expect locally intense and prolonged phenomena, especially on the west and south coasts. Hail may fall during storms, while snow or sleet is likely on the highest Troodos peaks.
Winds will blow mainly south-westerly at 3–4 Beaufort, reaching 5 Beaufort on windward coasts and temporarily up to 6 Beaufort. Temperatures will reach about 19°C inland, around 20°C on the south-east and east coasts, 17°C on other coasts, and about 8°C in the mountains.
Rain and storms to continue into the weekend
Unstable Cyprus weather will continue on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, with periodic rain and isolated storms expected. Hail remains possible during storms, while snow or sleet may fall again on the highest peaks of Troodos.
Saturday’s weather may become particularly intense in the west and south, while temperatures will drop slightly below seasonal averages and remain there through Monday.
