Lewis Hamilton’s week-long Mercedes farewell tour is in full swing with the seven-time world champion saying goodbyes to the German manufacturer’s employees and sponsors ahead of his move to Ferrari.
After finishing his Silver Arrows career on the track last Sunday with a stirring comeback drive to fourth place in last the season-ending Abu Dhabi GP, Hamilton headed to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia to visit the home of long-time title sponsors Petronas to say his goodbyes there in front of 1,000 staff.
The seven-time champion then went to a fan event attended by 3,000 people for a Q&A.
“To come here for the last time as a Mercedes driver has brought up a lot of emotions,” said Hamilton, who joined the team in 2013.
“It is obviously sad in one respect but also beautiful to be able to celebrate everything we’ve done together with our Petronas colleagues and the Malaysian fans.
“It is always so humbling to come here and see the support.”
On Wednesday, Hamilton was back in Europe visiting Mercedes’ main company base in Stuttgart, Germany.
The manufacturer has backed his career, first with McLaren and latterly their own works team, since he was 13 years old.
He will be back in the UK at the end of the week for what are bound to be emotional farewells to the F1 team’s bases in Brackley and Brixworth.
