Hacker warns against borrowing chargers from others

Date:

A young man known as the “world’s best hacker” has issued a warning to those who share or borrow chargers. It’s something most of us have done at least once, but according to Ryan Montgomery, doing so could expose you to significant risks.

Montgomery, an ethical hacker who spends his time helping others, has previously spoken about the dangers of the dark web and its hidden threats. In a video shared on his Instagram account, he cautions followers about why they should think twice before using a random cable to charge their iPhone or any other device.

The danger of fake charging cables

Showing two identical charging cables, Montgomery explains that one of these cables can cause ‘catastrophic’ harm to your computer or phone. In the video, he connects what looks like an ordinary cable to his computer, demonstrating its malicious potential.

“With this cable plugged in, I have full access to this computer,” he says, clicking on a program on his phone that opens access to the laptop. He continues that this is a fully functional cable; you can still charge your phone with it. But never trust a cable that isn’t yours. If you’re really concerned, invest in a USB data blocker.

What these cables do

The so-called “O.MG Cable,” released in 2019, is described as the “most dangerous USB cable in the world.” Costing up to €200 per device, it looks like a regular cable for charging your phone but is far from ordinary. Instead, it is equipped with an internet-ready gadget that provides access to Wi-Fi networks.

Mike Grover, the creator of the cable, explained its function: “It’s a cable that looks identical to others you already own. But inside each cable, I embed a component with a web server, USB communications, and Wi-Fi access. You plug it in, it powers up, and you can connect to it.”

Stay safe

Montgomery’s advice serves as a reminder to always be cautious when using accessories that aren’t yours, as some may harbour hidden threats. Investing in a USB data blocker can provide an extra layer of protection for your devices.
