At least 24 heatwaves around the globe, previously deemed impossible, have been attributed to climate change, according to an analysis of hundreds of scientific reports highlighted by the Guardian.
The analysis by the Carbon Brief website, which focuses on climate change, reveals that the likelihood of such phenomena in North America, Europe, and Asia would have been nearly zero without global warming caused by emissions from fossil fuels.
The findings also indicate that 550 heatwaves, floods, storms, droughts, and wildfires have become “significantly more severe or more frequent” due to global warming.
The newspaper notes that these conclusions are drawn from analysing only a fraction of the extreme environmental events that have occurred.
The analyses assess the impact of a global temperature increase of approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius, with evidence suggesting this threshold may already have been surpassed.
Researchers are urging countries participating in COP29 in Baku to implement drastic and swift reductions in emissions and urgently finance vulnerable communities requiring protection against climate impacts.
