At the “Earth Hour 2026” event in Troodos on Saturday, Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare Antonia Theodosiou reported that greenhouse gas concentrations in Cyprus have reached historic levels. She cited findings from the Centre of Excellence for Climate and Atmospheric Research of the Cyprus Institute, published in January 2025, which identify electricity production and transport as the main emission sources.
Despite this, she noted progress, referencing a 5.2% reduction in emissions recently reported by Eurostat in February 2026, but stressed that continued and enhanced efforts are required for a meaningful transition to sustainable energy and development models.
Water scarcity and desertification intensify
Theodosiou highlighted that environmental pressures extend beyond emissions, particularly in the water sector. She warned that drought is no longer a future threat but a present reality affecting daily life, agriculture, and land sustainability, with desertification already occurring.
She emphasised the need for a coherent approach linking public policy with individual responsibility in managing natural resources such as energy, water, and soil.
Troodos Geopark’s environmental significance
The Commissioner praised the Troodos region and Geopark as a vital natural and geological treasure, covering approximately 45% of the Troodos range and 15% of Cyprus. Recognised in 2015 as part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network, the area combines geological uniqueness, rich natural environment, long-standing human presence, and cultural traditions.
She highlighted Troodos’ geological formation as a global scientific reference point and reinforced that the transition to climate neutrality is central to European and international objectives, linking it directly to climate crisis mitigation and ecosystem sustainability.
Renewable energy and energy communities
Theodosiou stressed the importance of renewable energy development, particularly photovoltaic systems, as essential tools for emission reduction. She also underlined the role of energy communities, participatory models of local renewable energy production and management that empower citizens and local communities to actively contribute.
