Greek Parliament approves 2025 budget with 159 votes in favour

Date:

With 159 votes in favour and 139 against, out of 298 total votes cast on the Revenue Section of the Budget, the Greek Parliament ratified the 2025 state budget following a roll-call electronic vote. Defence expenditures and the expenses of the Presidency of the Republic were also approved by a large majority.

The 159 affirmative votes included 155 from New Democracy MPs and four from independent MPs.

“The budget emphasises all aspects of economic policy,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his speech in Parliament, describing it as a blend of social responsibility and developmental vision.

He announced a series of interventions focused on the citizen, small business owners, and bank customers, stressing that the measures are aligned with European rules, grounded in national economic principles, and realistic. These initiatives aim to redirect credit institutions towards their core mission while ensuring compatibility with financial stability.

The Prime Minister highlighted Greece’s ability to pass its 2025 budget, contrasting it with larger countries facing political and economic challenges. He referenced France’s lack of a functioning government, Germany’s coalition collapse over key policy disagreements, and Italy’s difficulties in addressing excessive deficit requirements imposed by the EU.

“We are not in that category,” Mitsotakis stated.

He further noted that the session took place as Greece marks 50 years of democratic stability, amidst global, European, and regional upheavals, including wars and political turbulence.

Responding to opposition leaders, he presented “indisputable figures,” emphasising that Greece is on a trajectory of continuous economic upgrades. He argued that these improvements are not only vital for public finances but also directly benefit households and businesses by reducing borrowing costs.

Mitsotakis also highlighted Greece’s recognition in the Economist’s rankings and its selection to host Europe’s first AI Factories.
