Two Greek frigates, the Belharra-class “Kimon” and “Psara”, have arrived in Cyprus as tensions rise in the region. Their deployment follows a recent security incident at the British base.
In the early hours of Monday, 2 March, the British base at Akrotiri was targeted by an Iranian drone. The attack prompted immediate security alerts across Cyprus.
Greek response
Following consultations between Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Greece dispatched the frigates “Kimon” and “Psara”, the latter equipped with the anti-drone system Kentavros. Two pairs of F‑16 fighter jets were also sent to the region.
High-level defence meetings
Yesterday, the Greek Minister of National Defence, Nikos Dendias, and Cypriot Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas met in Cyprus. They were accompanied by the chiefs of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) and the Cypriot National Guard (GEEF) to review the security situation.
The deployment underscores heightened regional alertness and coordination between Greece and Cyprus in response to escalating Middle East tensions.
