The Greek frigate “Kimon” arrived at Limassol port on Wednesday afternoon, joining the frigate “Psara” to provide protection against potential threats from Iranian drones in the region.
“Psara” and “Kimon” operations
The “Psara”, equipped with the anti-drone system “Kentavros” (Centaur), had arrived earlier at 11:15 for resupply. “Kimon” initially remained anchored before docking around 16:00 for refuelling. Following this, “Psara” departed for patrol in the area, according to press reports.
Capabilities of Kimon
The “Kimon”, a first-line FDI HN (Belharra) frigate of the Hellenic Navy, is the most advanced anti-air platform in the Greek fleet. It carries 32 vertical launch cells for Aster 30 missiles, providing long-range area air defence.
The frigate features the AESA Sea Fire radar, capable of simultaneously tracking multiple aerial targets, and an advanced combat system. This configuration allows “Kimon” to act as an air defence hub, covering not only the ship itself but also the surrounding operational area.
Advanced armaments and systems
Key features of “Kimon” include:
- Vertical launchers for Aster 30 missiles for extended-range air defence
- AESA Sea Fire radar with active electronic scanning
- SETIS combat management system
- Anti-aircraft and anti-submarine weapons, plus a 76mm gun
The frigate is specifically designed to provide wide-area air defence, supporting the mission to strengthen air security in the Eastern Mediterranean.
