The “military court” in occupied Nicosia has delivered an acquittal in the case of five Greek Cypriots who had been facing charges related to allegedly entering a “military area” on 19 July.
According to reports, the ‘court’ ruled that the accusations against the five were not proven beyond reasonable doubt. One of the defendants had been charged with entering a restricted “military zone,” while the remaining four were accused of assisting him.
The Greek Cypriots trial acquittal brings an end to a months-long case that had drawn public attention across the island. The men were detained in July after crossing into the area, leading to their appearance before a “military court” in the occupied territories- a process not recognised by the Republic of Cyprus or the international community.
Following today’s verdict, all five have been cleared of the charges and are expected to return to the government-controlled areas. Cypriot authorities have not yet issued an official response to the acquittal but had previously maintained that the men’s detention violated international law.
