Greece: Son of widow of former minister arrested for her murder

Date:

Four years after 87-year-old Eleni Papadopoulou, widow of PASOK minister Giannis Papadopoulos, died in a Kolonaki apartment fire initially deemed accidental from a cigarette, police now charge her 60-year-old son, a biologist, with murder. Key evidence includes a Fire Service report confirming flammable liquid, naked flame ignition, and arson intent, plus toxicology showing high sedatives despite no prescription and normal carbon monoxide levels indicating death before the fire.

Neighbors reported frequent arguments, locking her in, and hearing her plead, “I won’t do it again”, amid abuse. The son pushed to sell her €750,000-2M apartment against her wishes to cover €400,000 debts; a gasoline canister found in his home links him directly.

Investigation breakthrough

Angeliki Nikolouli’s “Fos sto Tunnel” exposed disputes, real estate sales attempts, and reopened the case via the Homicides unit. He denied involvement in interviews, insisting accident, but contradictions emerged over smoke, entry, and tensions dismissed as typical mother-son spats.

Fire smoldered hours; she sat carbonized on her couch, cat dead from asphyxia nearby.

Upcoming apology

The suspect, held at GADA, apologizes Tuesday; his lawyer calls the evidence insufficient. Nikolouli’s MEGA special at 23:15 reveals more.
