A person was fatally struck by a passenger train operating between Thessaloniki and Larissa on Thursday morning, shortly before reaching Larissa.
The train was brought to a stop following the incident, while passengers are being transferred by bus to Larissa.
According to Hellenic Train, the driver of service 1593, carrying 68 passengers from Thessaloniki to Larissa, noticed a person on the railway line at 9:12am, before Larissa station.
The driver activated the train’s automatic braking system and sounded the warning signals, following the required procedures. However, it was not possible to avoid striking the person.
Emergency services at the scene
The train remains at the location, where firefighters, police officers and EKAB emergency medical personnel have arrived to complete the required procedures.
The incident is expected to cause delays and possible changes to services on the Thessaloniki-Larissa line.
Hellenic Train expressed its condolences over the incident and said it is cooperating with the relevant authorities as they investigate the circumstances.
