Greece: Farmers convene on Thursday – Update on blockades

Date:

Critical meeting in Serres

The Panhellenic Blockade Committee of farmers convenes Thursday at 2 p.m. in Serres to chart the next steps for their mobilizations. Representatives from across Greece discuss the government’s latest responses to their demands.

Producers, who have maintained organized blockades at key points on the national road network for weeks, assess whether government proposals meet their claims. Decisions from the Serres meeting will determine if blockades continue, intensify or change form.

Tractor protests in Trikala and Karditsa

Farmers from Trikala and Karditsa drove tractors and farm machinery through city centres in protest marches. They arrived honking from their E65 motorway blockades, joining striking workers, trade unions, labour centres on 24-hour strikes, self-employed groups and students.

Northern Greece blockade map

Agro-livestock producers continue blockades into a third week across Northern Greece and vow to escalate actions in coming days. They plan to stay on national roads even during holidays.

Many farmers and livestock breeders hold new assemblies today and over the next 24 hours to decide on escalation.

Producers at the Malgara blockade ramp up efforts: from today, they block Thessaloniki’s entry lane from 12:00 to 15:30 and from 19:00 overnight. They have blocked the Athens-bound lane since December 1st; tonight’s general assembly decides on permanent Thessaloniki-bound closure from tomorrow.

Tractors line up at “Prasina Fanaria” near Macedonia Airport and at Dervenion junction on the old Thessaloniki-Kavala road. Dervenion participants plan a one-hour symbolic blockade from 13:00.

Chalkidona blockers schedule a two-hour closure on both lanes of the old Thessaloniki-Edessa road from 17:00, reinforced by farmers from Pella areas.

Meanwhile, beekeepers and farmers bolster the Nikiti lights blockade in Chalkidiki’s Sithonia.

Blockades in Imathia, Pella and Pieria

Producers hold steady at Kouloura junction. Alexandria farmers maintain indefinite closure of the Veroia-bound Egnatia Odos lane from Niselion junction since December 3rd, keeping one emergency lane open. Krya Vrisi farmers and livestock breeders from Pella join with tractors.

Blockades persist at Gypsokhorion in Pella on the Thessaloniki-Edessa road. Vegoritida and Kaïmaktsalan farmers position tractors at “Alisida” in Drosia, Pella.

Skydra producers mobilize; Almopia municipality farmers block Aridaia entrance; Edessa farmers stay on the ring road at “Fanaria”.

In Pieria, Aiginio farmers block the town entrance and hold closures on the old Thessaloniki-Katerini road. Variko junction sees Dimos Dion-Olympos producers with tractors for symbolic actions.

Western Macedonia updates

Western Macedonia producers remain at Baras Siatsista on Egnatia Odos with tractors; passenger and truck traffic diverts via old Kozani-Kastoria road. They distribute farm products daily to drivers and gain reinforcements from colleagues and labour unions.

Farmers, livestock breeders and beekeepers hold Philotas junction on the Kozani-Florina vertical axis; they skip action there today.

Kavala, Drama and Serres blockades

Kavala hosts three blockades: Chrysoupolis, Philippi Ancient Theatre and Moustheni on Egnatia Odos. Participants head to ELGA branch tomorrow at 11:00 for symbolic protest with farm vehicles.

Kokkinogeia-Prosotsani junction farmers continue symbolic closures at this key link to Exaplatanos border and Drama. Five tractors join today’s Drama centre rally.

Serres farmers and livestock breeders enforce indefinite closure at Kerdylia junction on Egnatia Odos (both directions); all traffic diverts via bypasses.

The Panhellenic Blockade Committee meeting in Serres at 14:00 tomorrow shapes next moves for most blockades.
