Government employment increased by 461 persons in January

Total government employment increased by 461 persons (0.8%) in January 2025, compared to the corresponding month in 2024, to 55,107, mainly as a result of an increase in employment in the Education Service.

According to the Statistical Service, employment in the Civil and Educational Service increased by 0.4% and 3.3%, respectively. In contrast, employment in the Security Forces decreased by 1.6%.

As stated, in January 2025, the Civil Service employed 12,003 permanent employees, 4,173 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 1,353 employees with contracts of definite duration and 5,685 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Civil Service (51.7%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (5.8%).

The Education Service employed 12,456 permanent staff, 953 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 4,641 employees with contracts of definite duration and 141 hourly paid workers. Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in the Educational Service (68.5%) and hourly paid workers represented the lowest percentage (0.8%).

According to the Statistical Office, the Security Forces employed 8,273 permanent staff, 4,400 employees with contracts of indefinite duration, 291 employees with contracts of definite duration and 738 hourly paid workers.

Permanent employees represented the highest percentage of total employees in Security Forces (60.4%) and employees with contracts of definite duration represented the lowest percentage (2.1%).
