Giannis Antetokounmpo: Inside his billion dollar empire

Date:

As a player for the Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo has spent 13 full years in the NBA, beginning at the age of 19 when he first entered the league as a rookie. During that time, he not only reached the pinnacle of basketball success but also became extraordinarily wealthy.

A billionaire-in-the-making, without exaggeration. A multi-millionaire. And just when many – perhaps most – believed he would never change jerseys, satisfied with his achievements and wealth at the age of 31–32, the transfer “bombshell” of the decade exploded in basketball’s “Mecca”.

According to reports, the Greek Freak is leaving for Miami and joining the Heat, with the prospect of earning up to another $275 million over the next four years. A modern-day King Midas once again.

From time to time, he reflects on his past during interviews. Back in 2013, Greece was still in the early stages of a long and severe financial crisis, and he still had vivid memories of his own difficult years.

Those were the days when he had to walk the streets of Athens as a teenager, unknown to anyone around him, selling sunglasses, watches and small everyday items to earn a few euros and help provide basic necessities for his family.

After his first trip across the Atlantic to the United States – a country that would become the “Promised Land” for the Nigerian-born Greek international and former Filathlitikos player in Greece’s second division – his life began changing at cinematic speed. In fact, his story later became the subject of Disney’s biographical film Rise.

The 2.11-metre-tall Greek Freak, the boy from Sepolia and son of immigrants, began signing one “golden” contract after another with the Bucks, generating cumulative earnings worth hundreds of millions of dollars between 2013 and 2026 from salaries alone.

When additional income from his extensive list of sponsors, endorsement deals, business ventures and investments across multiple industries is added, the figures become even more staggering.

His total career earnings – both on and off the court – could eventually approach the $1 billion mark, including his new contract and estimated future commercial agreements.

Based on current projections, his minimum potential gross career earnings could theoretically reach between $850 million and $900 million from all sources combined, including more than $670 million in total career salary earnings, with approximately $338 million earned so far according to American media reports.

Life is unpredictable. For Giannis, this appears to be another fresh start, while the flow of wealth continues.

All his contracts

The Bucks are reportedly sending Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis to the Miami Heat in exchange for Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez and Kasparas Jakucionis.

According to ESPN, the NBA star will receive $58,456,566 next season, as stipulated in his Bucks contract, while the 2027–28 season includes a player option worth $62,786,682.

His future will depend on his own choices. If he declines that option, he would be able to sign a new four-year agreement worth $275 million.

If he exercises the player option instead, he could pursue a three-year extension worth $214 million, once again securing one of the most expensive contracts in NBA history – potentially his fifth major deal.

Sportico reports that the proposed $275 million contract would cover the period from the 2027–28 season through 2030–31.

The proposed trade could also reportedly provide him with an unexpected $14 million tax bonus due to differences in regional taxation.

Giannis’ four agreements with Milwaukee

His rookie four-year contract with the Bucks earned him just under $9 million ($8,615,140):

2013–2014: $1,792,560
2014–2015: $1,873,200
2015–2016: $1,953,960
2016–2017: $2,995,420

Then came the major leap with his second four-year, $100 million contract:

2017–2018: $22,471,911
2018–2019: $24,157,304
2019–2020: $25,842,697
2020–2021: $27,528,088

The next huge breakthrough came with the five-year supermax agreement worth $228.2 million:

2021–2022: $39,344,900
2022–2023: $42,492,492
2023–2024: $45,640,084
2024–2025: $48,787,676
2025–2026: $54,126,450 (up from $51,935,268)

In October 2023, he signed a three-year extension worth $186 million:

2026–2027: $58,456,566
2027–2028: $62,786,682 (Player Option)
2028–2029: Free Agent

How much he earns off the court

With annual earnings approaching $100 million – effectively making him a medium-sized Greek industry on his own – Giannis Antetokounmpo ranks 11th among the world’s highest-paid athletes and fourth among basketball players in 2026.

With total earnings of $99.2 million, he surpasses Kylian Mbappé, who ranks 12th with $95 million.

Of Giannis’ total income:

  • $54.2 million comes from basketball and his NBA contract with the Bucks.
  • $45 million comes from endorsements, partnerships and business ventures outside basketball.

His cumulative off-court career earnings are estimated at around $225 million, although that figure is based on unofficial data.

By the time he eventually retires, further growth in his commercial and business income over at least another four-year period appears highly likely.

Forbes lists his current sponsors as Breitling, Castrol, Google, GoPuff, Johnsonville Sausage Company, Kalshi, Kohl’s, Nike and Kimberly-Clark. However, the list may omit certain brands, advertising partnerships and business associates, including Greek-American billionaire John Calamos, Elias Georgiadis of Premia, his partnership with Metlen (Protergia) in Greece, Michael Jordan through WatchBox, as well as numerous start-ups and ventures across commerce, real estate and technology sectors.
