GENAR poll shows Tatar leading in upcoming “presidential elections”

Date:

Kıbrıs (20.01.25) reports that Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar is leading in voter preferences for the upcoming “presidential elections” in the occupied areas, according to a GENAR survey analysed by the company’s director, İhsan Aktaş, for the Anadolu Agency, as noted by the Press and Information Office.

Aktaş explained that, despite a general trend of “ruling” parties losing power in the occupied areas, Tatar appears ahead of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader, Tufan Erhürman, with 37.5% compared to 35.8% in response to the question: “Who would you vote for if presidential elections were held next Sunday?”

Furthermore, the National Unity Party (UBP), of which Tatar is a member, holds the highest percentage of party support with 44.6%, compared to 43.4% for the CTP, according to party preference responses.

Aktaş also noted that 55.3% of those who abstained from voting in the 2020 “elections” in the occupied areas stated they would vote for Tatar, giving him a potential support rate of 39.9%.

The poll results also indicate that 47.5% of the “people of the TRNC” favour a two-state solution in Cyprus, 25.3% prefer a federal solution, 23.6% support union with Turkey, and 3.6% favour a unitary state.

Additionally, 91.2% of respondents expressed a positive opinion about the presence of the Turkish army on the island and Turkey’s guarantees.

Finally, 67.5% of participants welcomed the “TRNC’s” acceptance into the Organisation of Turkic States (OTS).
