Gas leak causes alert at Eleftherios Venizelos airport arrivals area

Date:

A gas leak causes alert at Athens airport arrivals area on Tuesday afternoon, prompting immediate traffic restrictions as a safety precaution. The incident occurred at around 3:00pm at Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, following damage to a natural gas pipeline during ongoing construction.

According to initial reports, the leak was caused during excavation work at the site of the old short-term parking area (P1), where a new multi-storey parking facility is being built. Workers accidentally ruptured a natural gas pipe, leading to a temporary halt in road traffic across the airport’s arrivals-level road network.

Authorities, including airport management and the local traffic police, responded swiftly by closing the arrivals zone to vehicle traffic from 3:15pm to 4:40pm. During this period, pedestrian access to the arrivals area was maintained, while vehicles could only approach via the Departures area.

Following inspections and containment efforts, the damaged pipeline was sealed and the remaining gas was safely vented. Once authorities confirmed the situation was under control, traffic restrictions were lifted.

It is important to note that the airport’s operations were not disrupted, as it is not solely dependent on natural gas for its energy supply, using a combination of other energy sources.
