The National Theatre of Greece, fulfilling its institutional role, supports equality and the right for all individuals to enjoy theatre productions with equal opportunities for participation. In collaboration with Alpha Bank and as part of the “Culture for All” initiative, the National Theatre has established fully accessible performances since last year.
For this theatre season, the productions The Birthday, The School for Wives, and Nils Holgersson, Lilika, and the Four Peas will be staged on November 15-16, December 6-8, and February 8-9, respectively, with provisions for full accessibility on these dates. Performances will include Greek sign language interpretation, captions, and audio descriptions to ensure equal access for all, along with tactile tours to enhance understanding of the content.
Artistic Director Yiannis Moschos emphasised: “Culture cannot exist without inclusion, equal rights, and opportunities. Thanks to our partnership with Alpha Bank, we increased our accessible performances from four last year to seven this year. However, this is just the beginning of our efforts. We are working diligently to make all National Theatre productions universally accessible. Only when every production is available to everyone, regardless of ability, will we have truly achieved our goal.”
Head of Corporate Responsibility at Alpha Bank, Rouli Christopoulou, noted: “At Alpha Bank, we place great importance on the right for all people to participate as equally as possible in the cultural life of our country. We work to dismantle social exclusion, prejudice, and barriers that deprive people with disabilities of their basic rights. Therefore, we organise universally accessible exhibitions, opera performances, film screenings, literary readings, and art workshops for people with and without disabilities in collaboration with the country’s top cultural institutions. This partnership with the National Theatre to establish universally accessible performances, which began in the 2023-24 season, has grown and strengthened. The seven universally accessible performances of this theatre season for children and adults with disabilities bring inclusion to life on our nation’s premiere stage.”
This initiative is supported by ATLAS E.P., a company that provides accessibility services.
