France: Supreme Court upholds Nicolas Sarkozy conviction

Date:

France’s Court of Cassation today confirmed the conviction of former president Nicolas Sarkozy in the case of illegal Libyan financing of his 2012 re-election campaign.

Details of the conviction

The 70-year-old Sarkozy received a sentence on 25 September for belonging to a criminal organisation. Prosecutors proved he knowingly allowed associates to seek secret funding from Muammar Gaddafi’s Libya for his successful 2007 presidential campaign.

Sarkozy served three weeks in prison. On 10 November, a Paris court granted him early release on condition that he wear an electronic monitoring bracelet.

Appeal scheduled for 2026

The former head of state maintains his innocence and has appealed against the conviction. The Court of Appeal will hear the case from 16 March to 3 June 2026.
