Former MMAD chief: The real organised crime operates silently

Date:

Rising crime and public safety worries

Former MMAD Commander Savvas Christou highlighted worrying trends in Cyprus security, citing recent organised crime incidents, particularly in Larnaca. Speaking to Protoselido, he expressed disappointment that earlier warnings about such events are now coming true. He emphasized that violent incidents and shootings near police stations raise serious questions about public safety.

Organized crime vs. visible incidents

Christou clarified that the recent events do not necessarily indicate organized crime in its strict sense. “True organised crime in Cyprus usually operates quietly and methodically,” he said, referring to past cases in Limassol where intensive policing and daily patrols led to the dismantling of criminal groups and their prosecution.

International statistics and traffic concerns

The former commander noted that international crime statistics place Cyprus lower in safety rankings, with rising crime in Limassol and Nicosia. He also raised concerns about traffic-related offenses, which frequently lead to fatal accidents, especially among young people.

Police efforts and prevention

Christou acknowledged recent positive actions by police, including arrests and increased nighttime presence. However, he stressed that effective prevention and public confidence remain the primary goals.

He called for significant reinforcement of the police force, both in terms of training and staffing, ensuring visible street presence and rapid response. Special emphasis was placed on the MMAD unit, described as a key support force for all police departments, questioning whether it has received sufficient reinforcement in recent years.

Concerns over Larnaca incidents and police morale

Regarding the recent incidents in Larnaca, Christou criticized the lack of immediate disciplinary measures and highlighted the low morale among officers, describing it as “at rock bottom.” He stressed that statements alone cannot replace practical support.

Looking ahead

Christou also commented on the new Justice Minister, noting positive feedback but emphasizing that real results will depend on concrete actions and strengthening the security forces.
