The Department of Forests is stepping up its readiness as the public is expected to head into the countryside and forests during the August 15 holiday period.
The Department is urging people to enjoy nature safely and cooperate with its personnel and other relevant services, particularly the Police, to help prevent forest fires.
Extra caution with charcoal
People visiting holiday homes and using charcoal for cooking are advised to take particular care.
Fires should only be lit in specially designated and safe areas, while the use of firewood is discouraged because it increases the risk of a fire.
After cooking, people should ensure that charcoal and all sources of fire have been completely extinguished.
Burning garden waste prohibited
The Department of Forests is also calling on owners of holiday homes who hire third parties to clean their yards to make sure they are aware that burning grass, branches and other materials is prohibited.
Lighting a fire can result in an uncontrolled blaze, with serious and unpredictable consequences.
Restrictions remain in force
The Department reminded the public that from June 1 to September 30, the use of tools, machinery or other equipment for cutting or welding metals and other materials is prohibited without written permission from the Director of the Department of Forests.
The restriction applies in state forests and within two kilometres of their boundaries when the equipment produces heat, flames or sparks and there is a risk of causing a fire.
Discarding lit cigarette butts in forest and rural areas is also strictly prohibited.
Fires allowed only in designated areas
Lighting fires is permitted only at picnic sites and exclusively within specially designated areas established by the Department of Forests.
Visitors are also reminded that littering in forests is prohibited. The Department is urging people to take everything they bring with them and leave the natural environment clean.
Anyone who spots smoke or a fire is urged to immediately call 1407 for the Department of Forests or 112 for the Fire Service.
