The importance of collaboration with the United States, which is “a necessity, not merely a choice,” was emphasised by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos on Monday morning upon his arrival at the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels. He stressed that “this is not the time for distancing; this is the time for cooperation.”
Mr Kombos stated that today’s session would focus on the situations in Ukraine, the Middle East, and the Horn of Africa, with his remarks highlighting the relationship between the US and the European Union following Donald Trump’s re-election.
“The EU must approach this as a strategic partnership. We need to work to intensify dialogue and strengthen communication channels,” he said.
“This is not the time for distancing; this is the time for cooperation, and this is a necessity, not merely a choice,” he added.
When asked about the outgoing US administration’s decision to allow Ukraine to use American missiles against targets inside Russia, Mr Kombos noted that it represented “a significant development” and said, “This is something we will discuss today regarding its impact and how it could have positive effects on Ukraine’s defence.” He added, “At the same time, we need to be mindful of how this situation evolves.”
“We need to coordinate very closely with the Americans, and that is exactly the point I made earlier,” he continued.
Mr Kombos emphasised that regarding all issues on today’s agenda, “the European Union cannot address them alone,” stressing that it is crucial “to create synergies rather than differences.”
