Foot-and-mouth disease outbreak among cattle in occupied Cyprus

Date:

Authorities in the occupied areas continue measures against foot-and-mouth disease, with media highlighting worries, actions, and vaccination starts.

“Dialog” reports “Veterinary Check Prerequisite”: The “agriculture ministry” and “municipalities” disinfect livestock units and farms. Entrants disinfect, and some “municipalities” restrict animal movement to slaughterhouses only.

Experts say this strains livestock producers and butchers; animals require veterinary checks before slaughter.

“Minister” reassures on safety

“Gunes” quotes “Agriculture Minister” Huseyin Cavus: “No need for our citizens to worry.” Upon symptom detection in Lapithos, Famagusta unit and area entered immediate quarantine. Animal movement halted, disinfections underway.

He urged farmers and public to follow guidelines strictly: “No concern for meat or milk.”

Plans include 500,000 vaccinations, 13,000 animals daily, aiming eradication in three months.

Vaccination lessons from the past

“Kibris Postasi” stresses full vaccination programme enforcement, citing past bluetongue (Nov 2024-Sep 2024). Vaccination started but halted prematurely despite 2016 plan for all goats and cattle.

Now foot-and-mouth disease repeats the pattern. Orders issued, but consistent systematic vaccination essential for results. Technical committee formed since December 14 with stakeholders and academics.
