Veterinary Services in Cyprus report that epidemiological investigations and sampling in Paphos have returned negative results. However, a positive case of foot-and-mouth disease has been identified in a goat and sheep unit in Dromolaxia, within a designated infected zone.
Measures underway in affected areas
The affected unit, housing approximately 85 goats and sheep, will undergo animal assessment starting Friday, followed by culling to prevent further spread. Sampling and tracing continue within the infected areas, while statistical sampling across other districts aims to be completed by next week.
Vaccinations progress
Vaccinations of pigs began on Thursday, prioritising farms within infected zones. Second vaccinations for goats, sheep, and cattle are ongoing, covering 52% of the cattle population and 26.5% of all goats and sheep.
Monitoring and risk assessment
Epidemiological studies will soon be completed to provide a clearer picture of the disease across Cyprus. In zones within 3 to 10 km of Larnaca and Nicosia, additional infected units may still be detected, according to Veterinary Services.
The measures form part of ongoing disease management within affected zones, ensuring containment and protection of the wider livestock population.
