The Republic of Cyprus continues its efforts in relation to the reactivation of humanitarian aid flow to Gaza, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said on Monday, noting that this requires consultation with Israel.
Responding to journalists following his meeting with his Albanian counterpart Igli Hasani, Kombos said that Nicosia’s approach is based on an active stance, “which can yield some positive result on the ground at a practical level.” He noted that this requires consultation with countries with which Cyprus had cooperation in the past.
He added that various issues concerning practical aspects of the provision of aid, such as the collection of aid, etc., must be addressed, and noted that everything “is subject to the situation on the ground, which concerns a number of parameters, security issues.”
We are asking for it and seeking and believe that it should be done immediately, Kombos said in regards to the prospect of reactivating the aid flow, but added that he could not be more specific on aspects of this prospect at the moment.
“But I can confirm that our efforts continue, will continue, the needs are there, they are a given, and our will to do something substantial on the field, on the ground, is something that has already been implemented in the recent past, no matter if some do not want to accept or recognize it,” he added.
Asked whether the Israeli authorities are positive on this, Kombos noted that in order to implement a plan that involves sending humanitarian aid either from Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, or anywhere else, there would have to be consultation with Israel, “it practically cannot be done otherwise.”
