Dozens of Cyprus flight cancellations and diversions were reported on Thursday night and Friday morning following escalating tensions in the Middle East, as Israel launched strikes on targets in Iran. The developments disrupted air travel across the region and triggered the activation of the Crisis Management Centre at Larnaca airport.
According to Hermes Airports, which manages both Larnaca and Paphos airports, a high number of commercial flights originally bound for Israel and nearby destinations were rerouted to Cyprus due to safety concerns.
As of 11:00 a.m. on 13 June, 23 flights had been diverted to Larnaca and 9 to Paphos. These included aircraft from Europe and the United States.
In total, 15 flights to or from Larnaca and one flight to or from Paphos were cancelled, and it is expected that all scheduled flights between Cyprus and Israel for today will be cancelled.
Passengers from the diverted flights were safely disembarked, with their airlines arranging hotel accommodation and onward transport where necessary. Several travellers remained in the terminals of both airports.
Hermes Airports confirmed that all rerouting requests were successfully handled. In response to the volume of diversions and cancellations, Larnaca airport’s Crisis Management Centre was activated to ensure smooth coordination.
Despite the disruptions, all other scheduled flights to and from Cyprus are operating as normal.
Travellers are advised to check the status of their Cyprus flight cancellations via www.hermesairports.com and to contact their airline or travel agent before arriving at the airport.
