A Good Friday tradition passed through generations

The flaouna tradition remains one of the most vivid and cherished customs of Good Friday throughout Cyprus, and especially in the Paphos district, where families continue a practice passed down through generations.

From early morning, households begin preparations with care and dedication, preserving the authentic taste and aroma of this traditional Easter delicacy.

More than just an Easter treat

Women in the village of Empa told CNA that, as every year, they continue the tradition by preparing flaounes. Made with a rich mixture of cheeses, eggs, aromatic spices and herbs, flaounes are more than just a festive food- they symbolise family unity and cultural identity.

In the community of Kelokedara, many households dedicate Good Friday to kneading and filling flaounes, filling homes with scents that signal the approaching Resurrection.

Traditional baking methods endure

The baking process holds special importance. Many still choose traditional stone-built ovens, which give flaounes their distinctive flavour and texture, recalling times when entire neighbourhoods gathered around a shared oven.

Others prefer to take their flaounes to local bakers, relying on their expertise for a more consistent and professional result.

Regardless of the method, the process remains a collective experience, marked by cooperation, conversation and shared memories.

Whole community joins Easter preparations

Easter in Kelokedara is the village’s biggest celebration, with everyone taking part in preparations, according to local community representatives.

From Holy Week, women whitewash homes, clean courtyards and prepare ovens for flaounes and Easter bread. Children gather flowers to decorate the Epitaphios and look forward to dyeing red eggs.

Faith, memory and celebration

Good Friday has long been both a solemn and meaningful day. In earlier times, the entire village would attend church for the Epitaphios, followed by the evening procession with candles, in an atmosphere of deep devotion.

On Holy Saturday night, residents gather again for the Resurrection service and light traditional bonfires. Easter Sunday is marked with roasted lamb, shared meals in courtyards, and gatherings of family and friends.

These customs continue to this day, preserving the traditions and spirit of the village.
