The new school year 2025–2026 begins today, Monday, with the first school bell ringing across Cyprus for pupils in primary schools and kindergartens.
A total of 611 schools are opening their doors, including 329 primary schools and 274 kindergartens. In these, 51,590 primary school pupils and 13,117 nursery children will be taught by 7,557 teachers. In addition, nine special schools and 145 special units for pupils with special educational needs are also in operation.
Pupils in primary and special schools will attend classes today for registration, allocation into classrooms or groups, and distribution of books, before beginning their normal lessons. They will remain at school until 1:05pm.
All children of compulsory pre-primary education (aged 4 years and 6 months and above), along with younger children who were already attending the same kindergarten last year, will also begin their lessons today. Their timetable will run until 1:05pm.
Children aged 3 to 4 years and 6 months who are starting kindergarten for the first time will attend gradually under an individual phased schedule, with daily increases in hours until full adjustment. By 11 September 2025, all children will be attending normally, except in special cases requiring extended adjustment.
