A fire that broke out around 14:20 between the occupied villages of Agios Amvrosios Kyrenia and Hartzia, caused by electrical cable sparks, was quickly brought under control.
According to Turkish Cypriot media, the fire burned approximately 12 donums (around 12,000 m²) of land, affecting 80 pine trees, 53 carob trees, and 10 olive trees. The fire was tackled by teams from the “fire service”, the “forestry department”, the “civil defence” of the relevant “municipality”, units of the Turkish army in the area, as well as local residents. A total of 29 different types of vehicles were used in the firefighting effort, and the blaze was brought under control by around 15:00.
In a written statement, Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar noted that, under the extreme heatwave conditions currently being experienced, people should avoid any activities that could trigger fires. “Every tree that burns is a major loss of natural wealth,” he said.
Mr Tatar thanked all firefighters, teams, and members of the public who assisted in extinguishing the blaze.
