A semi-conscious person was discovered by members of the Fire Service at 05:27 this morning, after crews rushed to a fire in a two-storey apartment building in Nicosia. The person suffered burns.
Firefighters moved them outside and handed them to an ambulance crew, which transported them to the ER of Nicosia General Hospital, according to the Fire Service. Fire Stations in Nicosia responded to the incident. The statement says the fire started in a ground-floor apartment and spread to neighbouring units.
While battling the flames, firefighters also searched every floor of the building. They located the semi-conscious individual there. They also found two more people on the rooftop. Both had inhaled smoke but remained conscious. Firefighters helped them outside as well.
The fire and heat caused extensive damage to the apartment where it began and to the two adjacent ground-floor apartments. The building’s electrical panel in the entrance hall also sustained damage. Smoke and heat affected the apartments on the upper floors too.
Investigators are examining the cause of the blaze in cooperation with the Police.
The Fire Service notes that, in the last 24 hours, it received 41 calls for assistance: 25 fire calls, 13 special services and 4 false alarms.
