The Fire Service responded to a total of 38 incidents over the past 24 hours, including 15 fires, 17 special service calls and six false alarms.
According to Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, a fire broke out at 06:56 on Sunday in the community of Gourri in the Nicosia district. The blaze affected a small single-storey house constructed of brick, stone and a wooden tiled roof.
The fire started in the fireplace area and spread through the chimney to the wooden roof structure, causing extensive damage to part of the roof. No lives were endangered during the incident.
Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, with firefighters using water hoses and breathing apparatus to bring the blaze under control. The cause of the fire was attributed to the fireplace chimney.
Earlier, at 00:55, the Fire Service responded to another fire at an old abandoned house in Heroes’ Square in Limassol. Large piles of waste materials and rubbish were burning inside the building.
Using water hoses and breathing apparatus, firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze while also protecting neighbouring homes attached to the abandoned property. Three fire engines took part in the operation.
The cause of that fire remains under investigation in cooperation with the police.
