Firefighters at risk during Ypsonas factory blaze

Date:

A large fire broke out shortly after 2am at a paper goods factory in Ypsonas, near the town hall, causing multiple explosions and damaging two nearby homes. The fire has now been brought under control, with firefighters continuing final extinguishing efforts.

Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis described the operation as dangerous, as pressurised gas canisters stored on-site exploded and were launched across the area, posing a serious risk to firefighters. The factory had not been declared as storing hazardous materials.

Ten firefighting units, including EMAK, responded to the scene, and several homes were evacuated with the help of Civil Defence.

Authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire, with access to the building pending a safety assessment. The area remains cordoned off.
